"Elevator Music" showcases three tracks from the powerhouse duo of Charmaine Lee and Ikue Mori. For those somehow unfamiliar, Ikue Mori has been making music i the underground since the late 70s. Beginning as the drummer for the now legendary no-wave band DNA, she would go on to do numerous electronic collaborations and solo works. Mori and Lee have previously collaborated live in the past, in fact, notably at the ongoing Ende Tymes festival in NYC.
Charmaine Lee has been stunning audiences in NY and abroad over the past several years with her incredibly unique blend of vocal techniques and electronic elements that coalesce into a new level of cut-up noise. Those who have witnessed her impeccable live performances have been eagerly awaiting more recordings since her KNVF lp and following collaborations with Sewer Election and Zach Rowden. Finally, on her own new imprint, Kou Records, we are offered a taste of what Lee and Mori have been up to.
"Textural" and "dynamic" are words that don't even begin to scratch the surface of what is presented here. Sparkling, chime-like synths punctuate a frenzy of short breaths and chitters, bouncing between the folds in your brain. A few clearly spoken, hypnotic lines guide you through the forest of sound on the A side and bring you to the clearing upon the concluding track. Cosmic odyssey meets cartoon storyboard at 1000rpms. So much happens in such a short time and your attention is held the entire way through. The chemistry between Mori and Lee is obvious, we can only hope that there is more to come. Like all good 7"s worthy of their format, you'll be flipping this one again and again.
