High Grove is the experimental tape duo of Montreal's Heather Ross and Sara Delecorte. Originally recorded and released on Sloane Distro in 2019, Gracious Host is proud to re-issue this collection of High Grove's earliest work. The two sides of this tape correspond to High Grove's two EPs, each with it's own flavor. Side A provides us with a deeply immersive pool of tape-work and ambience. Each piece gently swells and releases, like a deep breath. The subtle use of guitar and piano on this EP also stands out and helps to create an even more thoughtful album feel.
The B side is of course anything but 'B' material: these pieces are from where the tape gets its title and the reasons are soon made apparent. A miasma builds from warbling loops and fuzzed-out synthesis. The grainy textures and ponderous melodies harken memories of an endless season of cold. By this time, listeners can truly feel how it has been gnawing, but with each gentle note breaking through the dissonance there is a promise of warmer days to come.
Although both Ross and Delecorte each have their own mesmerizing, tape-soaked solo endeavors (Skin and Desolatum, respectively) worthy of much attention, High Grove proves the two are capable of creating something greater than the sums of it's parts. This project is a fully formed organism with its own established composition and this collection serves as a spotlight on a major accomplishment. While the pandemic and live show lull that ensued had put the band on pause for a moment, they returned in full in 2024 much to our delight and have begun playing live again. A group to take note of and A Year of Winter is the perfect place to get acquainted.
